You and your cat might love snuggling up on the sofa and enjoying each other’s companionship.
However, when it comes to how you each see your surroundings, there are some distinct differences. Whether playing with toys or peering out the window at a bird, cats see objects and colors differently than humans.
So, how does cat vision work? With the free YouCam Video app and its cat vision filter, you can now view the world through your feline friend’s eyes. This article explains how to use the app, including step-by-step instructions and answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) about cat vision.

Why Do You Need a Cat Vision Filter?
A cat vision filter lets you adjust the brightness, color, and contrast in images and videos. These small tweaks give you a glimpse into how your cat sees the world.
For example, a filter can mimic cat vision by adjusting bright colors into muted hues. A filter can help you pick out toys and arrange your living spaces to accommodate your cat’s visual needs.
What Colors Do Cats See?
Like humans with color blindness, cats have limited cone cells in their eyes, which allow them to see only certain colors. They rely on movement and contrast to identify objects in their surroundings.
Here are some of the ways cat vision differs from human vision:
- Color: Cats have one-fifth of the cone cells that humans do. This limitation means they primarily see in black and white, but they can also see blues, greens, and yellows.
- Saturation: Colors do not appear as vibrant. Instead, cats see mostly grayish hues.
- Night vision: Due to a large number of rod cells in the retina and a reflective layer called the tapetum, cats only need one-sixth of the light that humans need to see in the dark.
Step-By-Step Guide To Using the Cat Vision Filter
Ready to get a look into your cat’s world? With the YouCam Video app, it’s easy to simulate cat vision.
Here’s how to use the app and its cat vision filter.
Step 1: Download YouCam Video
Go to the App Store or Google Play and download YouCam Video for your iOS or Android device. The app is free to download.
Step 2: Record or Upload a Video
Open the app and record a video from your cat’s point of view.
Whether filming your cat’s favorite perch, cat tunnel, or catnip toy, capture a day in the life of your furry friend.
Step 3: Apply the Cat Vision Filter
Choose the Cyberpunk 02 filter to mimic how cats view colors. Use the slider to adjust the saturation — 50 is roughly the most accurate match for how cats see color intensity.
Remember to save and share the video.
How the Filter Simulates Cat Vision
With YouCam Video’s Cyberpunk 02 filters, reds become muted grays, and blues and yellows become more intense.
By changing the hues and brightness, the filter simulates how cats perceive their surroundings.
For example, a red puzzle toy would look dull gray, and a blue or yellow feather teaser would appear brighter and more enticing.
Experience Life Through Your Cat’s Eyes
A cat vision filter can give you a good idea of how your cat sees various objects in your home. With these insights, you can better understand your cat’s preferences and offer the most visually engaging toys. For instance, your kitten might prefer a blue chew toy over a red one simply because it’s easier to see.
